no smoking in indoor public places

From the beginning of this month, Hong Kong extended it smoking ban to all indoor areas--workplaces, public areas, restaurants, bars, and karaoke lounges<a public living room, a lobby>. Those who break the rule could face serious punishment.

In fact, smoking bans can be seen around the world, in South Africa, New Zealand, Italy, Ireland and some parts of the US. Plus, UK will introduce the ban in 2007.

So, what about the mainland? Many no-smokers say they would welcome a decision to save them from passive smoking. While, it is obvious the smokers will say no to such a kind of ban.

The smokers believe that it is their rights where to go and where to sit. The ban mean they on longer be any freedom of choice. What is more, heavy smokers are unlikely to give up. If they have no public place to go, they prefer to stay home and have bad effect on their children. Some even argue the business of entertainment places will be driven out of.

However, it is on doubt that smoking is dangerous, and can lead to cancer and heart disease. It is not only bad for the smokers themselves, but also harms people nearby who inhale the smoke due to the passive smoking, which has been proven by some top research groups in the field of health and disease.

Obviously, every one has his own opinion in from his benefit. In my eyes, we can try to set the separate places for smoking part and no-smoking part in indoor public places. As a result, the smokers can still have their fun in the public as they like, and the no-smoker can be immune from the harm of passive smoking.

Maybe it will increase some cost for these places, but in the end it will benefit for their effort. Nothing is more important for human beings. They want choice, they want freedom, and they also want health, and happiness.
