Epressions that spring from a hand

Image
The expression" to come hat in hand " means to beg . You ask for something you cannot cl aim as your own. It is a handout. You ask for it as an act of charity. It is something which proud independent people will now do if they can help it. There are some people, on the other hand, who will make you beg even for something that is rightfully yours . Such people who give " with a glad and willing hand ". This is an old saying to describe such a person. He or she does not let the left hand know what the right hand is doing. This person gives freely without thinking about it too much. The expression " hand over fist " means quickly . People who are making money hand over first are getting rich so fast that they cannot believe it themselves. This expression comes from the sea. Sailors climbed the rop es or raised the boat sails by quickly putting one hand on top of the other. Generally, anything you pulled toward you was down hand by hand. Then one of the h

All can succeed

No one sets out in life to fail. The reality is that many do .Why so some prosper while other struggle just to exist? There is on simple answer to that question but here are a few thoughts that might shed some light onto this very complex issue. 1 The future is in your imagination Humans are blessed with the ability to think into the future. We can use our imagination to see possibilities. Use this unique gift in a positive way. Build a vision of what you want to be, have or do. It is the starting point of all successful activities. 2 To win ,you must expect to win Once wen imagine our future, we must wrap that vision with a belief system that encourages us to fulfill the vision. 3 We are surrounded by opportunity As we move through time, opportunities are abroad. All we have to do is recognize them and reach out to grab them. Capturing opportunity demands risk. Are you a risk taker? 4 Like that you do or do something else Low achievers usually don't like to work or don't like

The first stop of travelling Hangzhou

Image
Before I leave Hangzhou, I am going to travel around Hangzhou for all the valuable places and sites. Hangzhou is such a beautiful city that I do not really want to leave. But it is not up to me. My desired work location is in Beijing. Maybe Hangzhou is a city which is suitable for living and relaxing, but not for working. Today, Sisi, Niuniu and I went to the silk museum and china museum. Both of them are free. That is why I love Hangzhou so much. There are so many public places for the citizens for free. Then we went to Qiangjiang River for a relax. We had a good time. Enjoy some photos.

The blue planet--Earth

Seen from space, our earth, with water covering 70% of its surface, appears as the beautiful " blue planet". The bare land areas appear red or brown, dark green shows where there is plant cover, and the white means snow. Besides the seven major land areas, called continents, there are thousands of islands. Some of these are arranged in groups and some stand alone in the great oceans. Arms of land which reach out into the water are called peninsulas (半岛); seas, gulfs and bays are armes of the ocean which lie beteen islands and peninsulas. A narrow piece of land connecting two larger land areas is an isthmus (地峡); a narrow streth of water beteen two land areas is called a strait or a channel. Water is constantly in motion on the earth. Rain water runs off the mountains into valleys; it collects in lakes and rivers which carry it back to the seas. From the high altitudes of mountain passes and plateaus to the canyons and low-lying planis, the features of the land are wonderful t

Speech by Mary Anne Gale--success, what does it take?

Image
Mary Anne Gale, who is VP Product Supply Pan Asia of P&G, is a great business female leader at present. Yesterday, she gave a wonderful speech about how to be a successful career manager in the international meeting hall in our university . I am so glad to have this opportunity to listen to her insight and idea about the career development and the relationship between work and family, which really enlighten me greatly. What is more, I get much closer the culture of P&G before I step into the international and honorable company. First of all, Mary started her presentation about her family. Who is she? She is not only a business woman, but also a perfect wife and mother. She is so pond of her marriage, because they have a long distance marriage more than 20 years. In her opinion, her family is more important than her working in P&G. That is why she could balance the relationship between family and work. If there are some conflicts, they always sit down to have a disc

The postmodern life of my aunt

The moves picks up at a time when she has begun to feel lonely. Her nephew comes to Shanghai for a visit and --one thing leads to another--this woman with a college degree is scammed out of her life savings. Things get worse when she falls down some stairs and has to call the very family she has rejected. She had been humbled and changed. I guess this kind of story is common and ordinary in China, because of the effect of history. Some talent people could not make best use of their abilities but mingle into the life they would not want to live. They try their best to break away from it. That is why aunt in the movie returned Shanghai without hesitate. However, life in Shang

It is an utter waste of time

Image
I've come to an unfortunate realization: what I do with my life is considered by the majority of the adult population to be an utter waste of time. I play. Now, if I were a kid, playing would be acceptable, but something happens during the transition between childhood and adulthood. It is called the Protestant Work Ethic ( This is a stern moral code emphasizing the need for constant labor in life and work. Protestants consider work as one's duty because it benefits both the individual and society. So, working diligently is one's social obligation and a sign of God's influence and one's purity ), and it is forced upon us through unspoken rules that demand that we take ourselves and our tasks very seriously indeed. Even if they are meant to be fun. Once we leave school and hit the job market, things get worse . Everything we do is expected to have a purpose, or it's just not worth doing. We go to the gym to stay fit. We read novels to expand our minds. We go t

Are ugly teachers suitable?

Image
The girl above seems to be glad to show her scar on their face. But if she would like to apply the teaching jobs in the schools of Guangdong province, she would face awkward situation. Because in a recent regulation on physical requirements for teachers, the Guangdong provincial government stated that people with large scars, moles or other " facial defects" were not qualified for teaching positions in the province's schools. Inevitably, it led to a debate on the web. Many people accused the education authorities of " job discrimination ", arguing that it is the ability and morals that matter, not how perfect the face is. While, in the eyes of some people, the regulation may not be really "discriminatory" in the first place. Even if it does bar a small number of qualified people from teaching, it is done out of concern for the children. A scar-looking man may have a troubling, even traumatic, impact on the child's mind. However, it is not th

Higher fines for celebs?

Image
China plans to issue new policies to punish celebrities and rich people for having more children than the state family planning policy allows, according to a senior government official. The move came as the government witnesses an increasing number of complaints from the public saying celebrities and rich people are having more children than ordinary people because they are not afraid of paying fines. Most of those rich people are private business ow ners with high income and not affiliated with any government organization, said Mu Weiyong ,vice director of the family planning commission in China's northeast Liaoning province. According to the state family planning policy, government workers will be published by the party and their administration if they have more than one child. But no effective measures have been invented to punish celebrities and the rich as most of them are not affiliated with government organizations. The majority of those public figures and rich peopl

romantic lines from < The notebook >

2004 My dearest Alice: I could not sleep last night because I know that it's over between us. I'm not bitter anymore, because I know that what we had was real. And if in some distant place in the future we see each other in our new lives, I'll smile at y ou with joy and remember how we spent the summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love. The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds, and that's what you've given me. That's what I hope to give to you forever. I love you. I'll be seeing you. Noah Noah: I am nothing special; just a common man with common thoughts, and I' ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect I have succeeded as gloriously as anyone who's ever lived; I've loved another with all my heart and soul; and not me, this has always been e

generation overload

The contemporary culture advertise is achievement and accomplishment as the route to ultimate happiness. Once you do well, people always except you to do well. The culture had come to view teenagers as small adults. They were left feeling if they could not be a success by age 25, then they were failures. Therefore, you will find more of the overachiever culture in privileged areas because they are so driven toward getting into a prestigious school or university, but it transcends class lines. The problem is that driven children who don't know how to cope with stress may fall into risky behaviours or develop metal disorders. They are afraid they will lose their edge. They think they can get by with a little less sleep. Pretty soon they are skipping meals. They don't exercise. They have no recovery time. The only one thing they do is to run, run, run. In fact, much of the drive has been spurred by peer pressure. Peer pressure is one thing that all teens have in common. You can

friendship

Image
I believe friendship is one of the most important things in my life. Real friendship is a spiritually developing experience. Sometimes in life, you find a special friend. Someone who changes your life just by being a part of it. Someone who makes you laugh until you can't stop. Someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world. Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it. This is forever friendship. When you're down and the world seems dark and empty, your forever friend lifts you up in spirit and makes that dark and empty world suddenly seem bright and full. Your forever friend gets you through the hard times, the sad times and the confused times. If you turn and walk away, your forever friend follows. If you lose your way, your forever friend guides you and cheers you on. Your forever friend holds your hand and tells you that everything is going to be okay. And if you find such a friend, you feel happy and

making a difference with movies

Image
Have you heard of FilmAid International? The founder, Caroline Baron, is a movie producer. She convinced of the idea for Filmaid in 1999 when she heard a report on a radio program about refugees. The broadcast said people in refuge camps had food and shelter, but many of them were depressed because they had nothing to to. So Caroline brought movies to the camps from Kosovo , Kenya, Tanzania, Pakistan, Afghanistan. Many refugees have seen appalling sight. The movies gave them something else to think about. The organization chooses nonviolent, family-oriented films. Beside that, it also shows educational films about topics to refugee life, such as AIDS and so on. The movies communicate ideas to large groups much easier than fliers do. Caroline said " Of course food and shelter are the first need to be met, but people need more to survive. Seeing a film opens people's minds, inspires them and gives them hope." For more information, please refer to their website: filmaid .

street performing

Image
Street performing in the USA is a very popular kind of art. From the Wenes Bank in Los . to the Times Square in New York, it attracts part-time musicians, dancers and mimes in the towns of the USA, no matter or big. The performers often put a hat or opened instrument for collecting money from the watchers. In fact ,most of these performers are college students who are thirst to perform for audience. Although in some cities, it is forbidden to perform in the public like this, there is not such kind of law being obeyed whether it is full of hoax. When the performance is over, the performers will be rewarded zealous applause , and even some young girls will dance with the applause.Of course, the money is better.

three passions

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair. I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy –ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness--that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what- at last- I have found. With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I

why do l like reading literature

Image
I am fond of reading literature, although I am engineering student. By it, I could get a lot of fun and enjoyable time. Someone maybe argue that it is possible to kill time. Of course not. Literature not only provides pleasure for me in my spare time, but also shows me the reality, kindness and beauty of the world. It is literature that teaches me to face all kinds of difficulties and mischiefs. Different from technical books and journalism, literature does not present knowledge or information of science and technology, nor does it narrate the daily news or event. Values as works of arts, literature includes drama, fiction, essay, poetry and biography. Reading these literary forms can broaden our version and enrich our knowledge, especially the understanding toward the history of our own country, the culture of other countries ,and the development of the whole world, hence makes us a full man. Every literary form has its own benefit for us. For example, from reading drams and essays, we

no smoking in indoor public places

Image
From the beginning of this month, Hong Kong extended it smoking ban to all indoor areas--workplaces, public areas, restaurants, bars, and karaoke lounges < a public living room, a lobby >. Those who break the rule could face serious punishment. In fact, smoking bans can be seen around the world, in South Africa, New Zealand, Italy, Ireland and some parts of the US. Plus, UK will introduce the ban in 2007. So, what about the mainland? Many no-smokers say they would welcome a decision to save them from passive smoking. While, it is obvious the smokers will say no to such a kind of ban. The smokers believe that it is their rights where to go and where to sit. The ban mean they on longer be any freedom of choice. What is more, heavy smokers are unlikely to give up. If they have no public place to go, they prefer to stay home and have bad effect on their children. Some even argue the business of entertainment places will be driven out of. However, it is on doubt that smoking is dang

how happy are you right now?

Chris Gardner ( Will Smith ) is a bright and talented, but marginally employed salesman. Struggling to make ends meet, Gardner finds himself and his five-year-old son evicted from their San Francisco apartment with nowhere to go. When Gardner lands an internship at a prestigious stock brokerage firm, he and his son endure many hardships, including living in shelters, in pursuit of his dream of a better life for the two of them. --- the pursuit of happyness In the beginning of 2007, a touching movie cheered me greatly. How happy are you right now? Do you even know? More exactly, what is happiness? Can you explain it correctly in your own words or feelings? In the movie, when Chris's wife was going to leave him, he thought of a celebrity and pondered that: Maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue. Maybe we can actually never have it, no matter what. But, it is difficult to experience moments of happiness if we are not aware of what it is we genuinely love. Most people

amazing grace

Image
Judy Collins, American Amazing grace! How sweet the sound! That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, Was blind but now I see. T'was grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease; I shall possess, within the vail, A life of joy and peace. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, who called me here below, Will be forever mine

Do you still remember your first time being loved by someone?

My memory took me back to primary school when I was in the forth grade. At that time, I was monitor in my class and loved by my teachers and classmates. I was just like the General to lead my classmates to hold together and study hard. Sometimes , Our girls would boycotted the boys, quarrelling with them. Granted, we could not fight with them. We were not their counter workers . One day, after class, I and my girls were playing games in the playground. A boy who was in the fifth grade came up, gave me a card and ran away quickly. Other boys around kicked up a row, saying" **loved **, **loved**``````". I felt so humiliated in front of my classmates. At that period , "love" is a dirty and ashamed word for us. We all felt shy and guilty to talk about the word of love. I shocked and nearly stunned at first. Fortunately , the bell was ringing and it was time for class. We rushed into the classroom. During the whole class, I could not listen to what my teacher was say

my impossible mission--buying train ticket

The peak transport on the train in the spring festival ( chunyun 春运 ) is the particular and special phenomena in China. Every year before and after the spring festival, China's railways will carry about 140million people to various places. The majority will be migrant workers ( 民工 ) and students. Students seem luckier than the migrant workers because of their privileges. They can book a ticket 12 days( Hangzhou, other cities may be different ) in advance versus 11days for migrant workers. However, for those from provinces with a lot of labourers, such as Anhui , Sichuan , Jiangxi , Henan , Shaanxi , most in the westsouth and westnorth , getting a ticket can mean a lot more effort. According to the government , " No price increases during this year's spring festival ". In fact, it is a only word game. It is harder and more difficult to get a ticket. Most of the tickets have been flowed into the scalpers ( 黄牛 )or agencies. Yesterday , I got up at 4a.m. to get the r

Robots of the world

The idea of the robot was invented by a Czech (捷克) playwright ( a perosn who writes plays) called Karel Capek back in 1921. The word "robot" means "work" in the Czech language, and that is what they are intended to do. Back in 2004 there were two million robots in use worldwide. the International Federation of Robotics says this figure will rise to eight million by the end of 2007. The Japan Robot Association predicts that by the year of 2025 there will be a personal robot industry worth over US50 billion per year worldwide. By now, Japan is the biggest country to develop and purchase the robots. The year of 2006 was the year of the robot. We saw the development of robots that could taste wine, race a car, teach children how to move and stop old people from feeling lonely. If we look at the kind of projects already underway , we can predict that robots will be providing physical assistance and even companionship for the elderly, helping people with disabilities get

Do you write diary?

The point of diary is that you write it every day, like brushing your teeth. I am appalled (to overcome with consternation, shock, or dismay ) by people who say they only write when they have something interesting to record. In my eyes, a diary is not about highlights, but quotidian .(everyday, ordinary) It is about what you think and do on a dull day as much as on an exciting one. Of course maybe you will write more on an exciting one. But recording the dog days (boring days) has the value too. My earliest diary dates from 13 years ago, when I was in the fourth grade in the primary school. My father sent me a diary notebook as my birthday present. Plus, it was also with a small lock and key. I was so excited that I could own such a beautiful notebook and can write my own thoughts and life. What is more, I felt the respect from my parents due to the lock of the notebook. Although mostly I wrote some simple sentences and meaningful things in present eyes, the diary became my necessary

Is it possible to have a common tongue?

Can there are be a global English for global people? Specifically, Globish could be called the dialect of the globalization class- the people from places like Finland or Greece who meet in Shanghai to do business deals in English with people from India or Brazil. Globish is an attempt by non-English speakers to work out a language –based on English –in which they can communicate. In fact, as long as the 1920s, the British academic and critic IA Richards formulated Basic English, an 850 words version of English for use in China. However, it did not take off. Languages are not invented by experts and handed down. They evolve, like living things. That’s why Globish is becoming popular. It was invented by its speakers to meet their actual needs. The Golbish vocabulary has around 1500 words, compared to the 615,000 words recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary. It consists of words that can easily be recognized by non-English speakers. More obscure and specific words are explained in simp

safe in a crazy world

I am listening a wonderful song by Corrinne May : safe in a crazy world Safe in a crazy world I try to smile my tears away, I try to keep my cool. Oh but one more door gets in my way I feel like such a fool Trampled and bitter, My heart just wants to bleed and stop Believing in me. It feels like nothing is for certain and that nothing comes for free When they're lowering the curtain to the theatre of my dreams I stumble and i crumble and I'm sinking to my knees for you You cradle me You keep me flying You keep me smiling You keep me safe in a crazy world You understand me Embrace my fragility You keep me safe in a crazy world And in your arms I find the strength to believe in me again Noise keeps chasing me No matter where I go Oh and life likes pretending that it's on a TV show When it's hard to tell what's real From what the world just wants to preach You are the voice I seek You keep me flying You keep me smiling You keep me safe in a crazy world understand me

awful people

In the world, there are always some awful people to remind us the reality of the society is not ideal as we think. They are fond of pretend being sanctimonious, just like the wolves in sheep’s clothing. I have to open my eyes and stay awake to protect myself. In fact, one of my used admired teachers is such a kind of person. He is some kind successful, with one of the top awards by the government due to his achievement in the academic field. Plus, he is also a successful enterpriser who owns a famous manufactory in Shenzhen. And, he is planning to invest another machine factory in Hangzhou. Therefore, in the eyes of the world, he is a celebrity with great fame and wealth, admired by most of people. However, in some other fields, he is a squalid guy, because he is a lady-killer. He makes use of his status and fame to trap his young students. Of course, it is a two-side business. Once the girl accepts his lure, she must be some kind of person—van and shallow. As you can imagine, these pe

Do not let anyone steel your dream

I remeber as a small child when would have these gatherings with either family of friends. Invariably somebay would come up and mention my "cuteness" and ask,"what are you going to be when you grow up?" Well, it started out being a hero or some kinds of superstars. Later it was a scientist, lawyer ,journalist ---- As I grew up and got into the university, there was the simliar question"what is your major", which is designed to find out what I would be when I "grew up". By then I had my heart set on becoming an engineer, since I had began to study the coursed in the university. During the following years, the methodical coursed of study, the challenging experiments, the interweaving of theory and practice, and the tangible results of a successful experiment all appealed to my disciplined and inquisitive nature. However, for many, there is a "thief",which goes around stealing our dreams and robbing us of the necessary mental state to atta
